Colour
I would find it absurd to give you one more theory concerning the distinction between black and white and colour since there are many. It is elementary. I photograph primarily in black and white, but I shoot in colour when the need arises. Colours either serve as integral parts of a narrative or help to enhance a subject’s soul. Colours should be regarded with respect. I have learned much about colour through painting, and perhaps I have my perspective on it. I continue to learn about colour. The way I see colours can often be like how I hear music- you can listen to them a thousand times as many times as you can see them. If appropriately used, colour can have this repetitive visual power. However, increasing saturation or adding colour will whittle away at its volume. Volume does not come from colour. In colour stories, things are seen in a lively manner. It depends on our taste and our perception.
Recently, I came across an artist’s project that described how our brain fills in holes in black-and-white photos with colour by adding a small outline or a dash of colour. Although the image is still black and white, these small lines give the illusion that we are viewing the image in colour. I wonder what we see. In the end, it just confirmed what I have always believed: there is no black and white, only poor use of colour.
